What arrangements are made for meeting nurses on arrival?

Do the nurses often have to go to private cases?

Answers.

A letter is sent to the Shipping Office to be delivered early on board requesting the Sister to wait on the ship until someone comes to meet her and informing her that baggage will be attended to. Sisters volunteer to meet new staff and are usually at the wharf unless the ship comes very early in the morning or before scheduled time of arrival.

The last two arrivals on the Staff do private nursing when required; they are taken off as new Sisters come out. There is not much private nursing as the majority of maternity cases and sick persons are treated in the Hospitals.

Yes. The messing for three meals and tea at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. is about $40 per month; cakes, biscuits, sandwiches, minerals and wines are not provided.

Yes. About 9,500 Civilians.

Tennis and Golf are played all the year round. Tennis courts are avail- able at each Hospital. The bathing season lasts from April to October. There are several bathing beaches. It is too hilly for bicycling. roads are unsuitable for riding and expenses connected with it are high.

Twice weekly by the Empire Air Mail Service - time from London to Hong Kong, seven days. Second class mail comes via Siberia in approximately three weeks, or via Suez in four weeks approximately.
